Explain What It Means To Be An American

What does it mean to be an American? That is the question that many people ask, but do not know the real answer. Everyone will have their own opinion on what it means to be a true American. Some may say pride, some may say fearlessness, some may say determination, but to me the most important word that I could use to describe what it means to be an American is a family. We work so hard together as a nation to keep America going strong and become unstoppable. We are always protecting each other; whether it be from other countries or within each other. When something goes wrong or breaks down, we stay strong and build it back up. Family is what it means to be a true American. When something goes wrong in America, we make it right. For example, when Abraham Lincoln knew that slavery was wrong, he decided to put an end to the growth of slavery, which led to the end of slavery. When African Americans knew that they were being treated unfairly, Martin Luther King JR. put a stop to it by speaking out to America and showed that it was wrong. Now look how far we came from that point in America, we had our first African American president not too long ago. For example 9/11, Americans did not know that this terrorist attack was going to take place, most of us just thought that it was just a normal day. Then we see on the news or maybe right in front of us a horrifying tragedy, and we did not know what to do or how to react to it. Many Americans decided to help by taking as many people away from the scene by ship. There were thousands of ships that came to rescue and not because it was their job, but because we needed to protect each other.
