Threat: Diseases in the Soil
This threat emerges through the presence of clods. Clods are compacted clumps of soil that are anaerobic. When there are no clumps in the soil, the plants are fine. When tractors or other heavy machinery drive over the soil, it compacts it and expels the air. This is how clods are formed. The roots of the plants can’t penetrate these clods and are forced to go around. This can impact the growing ability of the plants around them. Diseases also live in these clods. Many of the diseases that affect crops live in these ‘safe harbours’. The diseases live off the absence of air making the clods the ideal place
