One of the fastest growing forms of contemporary slavery is human trafficking. Thousands and thousands of individuals are trafficked every year, majority consisting of women and young girls (Lyman & Potter, 2015). Cities including Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and Chicago are well known ports for trafficking. These women and young girls are continuously forced into prostitution, some manual labor or sweatshops. It’s common for children to be kidnapped and sold into the sex trade. Human trafficking typically flourishes when there are high rates of poverty, social segregation, and/or war (Lyman & Potter, 2015). Women and children are often convinced that a better life lies ahead, such as employment opportunities. However, if these individuals attempt to flee, they are threatened with violence, such as sexual intimidation or beatings, as well as harm against their family members.
