Motivation is the force within someone that drives them. It is the reason why someone did what they did. It can affect a person’s direction, intensity, and persistence of voluntary behavior. The are four theories of motivation, which are: the expectancy theory, four-drive theory, Maslow’s need hierarchy theory, and social cognitive theory. The expectancy theory discusses the reasoning as to why people will choose on behavioral option over a different one. In other words, people decide what to do based on what they expect their desired outcome to be. The expectancy theory is comprised of three components effort-to-performance, expectancy-performance-to-outcome, and outcome valences.
