Explain the main principles and purposes of a code of conduct and how they relate to and affect ethical issues as they apply to two roles in a specific profession.
The main purpose of a code of conduct is to ensure a professional is just that, a professional. When we think of a professional we think of somebody with a job that requires them to act in a professional and responsible manner. A code of conduct is developed to ensure that people in a specific profession all work towards the same guidelines. A code of conduct based around all of the universal ethical principles: Beneficence, Non-Maleficence, Justice, Respecting Autonomy and the law. Just because you are a qualified teacher doesn’t mean you know all there is to know. You have a responsibility to the children to ensure you give them the best education possible. This is done by keeping up to date with teaching methods and techniques, asking more experienced colleagues for advice and some reflective practice. This is essentially the same for a home tutor but they will have different teaching techniques to learn as they are only required to teach one on one and not to a classroom full of children. They also will not have access to other teachers for advice. This looks at responsibility and beneficence.
Help children and young people to become confident and successful learners.
This looks at helping the children become the best learners they can and giving them the best education possible. This is done by upholding the children’s rights and helping them understand their responsibilities. As a teacher it is your responsibility to listen to the views of the children and involve them in decisions that affect them and their education. It is also the responsibility of the teacher to not discriminate due to the background or aptitude of the child and to have high expectations of all the pupils. As a home tutor you have similar responsibilities. This covers responsibility, beneficence and respecting autonomy.
Demonstrate respect for diversity and promote equality.
This is very similar to the previous principle.
