1. Describe the eight steps of the cyclical perceptual process using a specific example from one of the five senses (do not just use the example from the first chapter!). Explain how top-down processing influences perception in your example. 要具体解释八个步骤吗,还是只是用例子? The eight steps of cyclical perceptual process are environmental stimulus, attended stimulus, stimulus on the receptors, transduction, neural processing, perception, recognition, and action, which are a journey from stimuli to response. The book gave an example of how people recognize tree. I want to make a similar but different example of how I recognize people on the way. I am shortsighted, and I don’t like wearing glasses, so I usually have a …show more content…
Grouping principle is the process by putting elements shared same characteristics, such as similarity, proximity, good continuation, common fate, and closure into units or objects, which works with segregation. Segregation is the process of separating one area or object from another. In visual perception, there’s a classical example of grouping and segregation working together, which is a version of Rubin’s reversible face-vase figure. Face-vase figure is a figure-ground articulation, two blue faces can be grouped due to they have same shape, and vase is separated. In auditory perception, there also has grouping and segregation. When I listen to a love song given by one woman and one man, I can quickly distinguish their voice due to they have different pitch (simultaneous segregation). But these two signals are combined as one signal and enter the ear (grouping). To combine grouping and segregation together to organize both visual perception and auditory perception, we can use an example of band performance. In the band, it seems like a “big picture,”(whole, grouping) which you can differentiate violin group, piano group, and saxophone group quickly due to the shape of these instruments (segregation). For the auditory perception part, people enjoyed the performance of band as a whole (one song, grouping), because they play at the same time. But if people listen carefully, they can still distinguish the different sound signals, because there are different timbre among violin, piano, and saxophone
