The kidnevs are paired reddish brown solid retroperitoneal organs on either sides of the spine. The normal kidney in the adult is typically 10•12 Cm in vertical dimensions, Cm in transverse width and approximately 3 cm in the antero-posterior thickness. The size in females tend toward the lower limits of this measurements.
In most individuals the right kidney lies 1-2 cm lower than the left. The upper pole of the left kidney lies at the level of the 12m thoracic vertebral body, and its lower pole at the level of the lumbar vertebra_ The right kidney extends from the tap Of the 1 st lumbar vertebra the bottom Of the 3" lumbar vertebra.itn
