Gregor Mendel was a German scientist and Franciscan Friar, who used the crossbreeding of peas to define the heredity of fertilization among hybrid organisms. Although he also crossbreed animals, his study between the pea plants is the most important because these established his law about inheritance. Due to his findings, he was named the Father of Genetics , however there are various scientist that would disagree with that. Although it appears that Mendel is the “Father of Genetics”, some scientist state that he has flaws in his experiments when pertaining to the topic of genetics. Not only did he do the experiments solely to find the differences between generations of hybrids, but he also could have miscalculated data; therefore to give he …show more content…
He focused on the data that Mendel noted and judged it because it was a few point off from what it should have been. He claimed that the data could have been falsified to make it appear perfect to mender’s standards. Fisher also states that Mendel did not use enough specimen when doing the experiment, which I would disagree upon. Even if the numbers are a little off, he ultimately found the linage to heredity which is a big step in itself. On the other hand, the actually author of the controversy between fisher and Mendel stated that “Mendel understood the idea of independent assortment and the principle of segregation , which are the basis of modern genetics” (Franklin, 16). Although this of course was not what he intended to find , the mere fact that he was able to deduce such a topic as heredity and figure out that it was not just a perfect mixture of traits, shows the beginning to the idea of genes and genetics themselves. Even though , scientist such as Crocos and Monaghan make valid arguments, Mendel deserves the credit as being the father of genetics because he ultimately he formed the basis of it. Without the ideas of heredity and various genes we would not be able to even fathom genetics. Just because Mendel was not searching for genes, does not mean he should not get credit for finding genetics because how should he know what he is searching for if he does not know what it is?
