My “Whale” to Survive Why do you think any living animal wants to keep living, to keep going on? Why do living organisms try so hard to survive? The very idea of just thinking about why organisms and more specifically, humans go on living is bewildering. The survival instinct theory states that all organisms have biological tendencies that help them survive. This implies that all behaviors and actions are based on the survival of the individual organism. Therefore, based on science, I believe that everyone’s “whale” or motivation to keep going can be narrowed down to the natural instinct to survive. On a broader scale, however, this so-called survival can be anything from getting the week’s paycheck, to running out of a burning building. Survival does not have to mean finding today’s meal or fending off an attacker. To summarize,

I always strive for good grades but I could never quite excel in math class. Occasionally, I wanted to give up and stop trying, but I always had a deep desire to keep pushing through though I never knew why. Later on, I finally had an unquestionably good teacher and it clicked for me. I finally understood what the teacher was telling me! About that time I also started understanding why I was always pushing myself to succeed and excel in school. I was trying to prepare for my future in the ginormous world. That brings me back to my argument of the Survival Instinct Theory. I try to survive school by making friends and connections, and also by obtaining exceptional grades. In the bigger picture, I need the training in school so that I can earn a well-paying job and survive financially. Therefore, I declare that my “whale” is not anything I struggle with, but is to be successful enough to make a living for myself and my family. My time attending Mountain Pointe has, and still is, an enlightenment era for
