Grow Your Own Pizza

One of the best ways to learn about plants is to grow your own vegetable and herb garden. An added bonus is getting to eat what you grow! Wouldn’t it be fun to grow a pizza? Well, maybe you wouldn’t grow the pizza, but you could grow some of the ingredients. A simple cheese pizza has tomatoes and herbs in the sauce. In a pizza garden you can grow tomatoes and a few common herbs, such as oregano, parsley, and basil. These plants are easy to grow, and it is a bunch of fun to watch it happen.

Then, decide which container will grow which plant and label each container with the plant’s name. When you have your supplies and you have read about each type of seed, fill the containers half full with soil and add a little fertilizer. Next, press the seeds into the soil. Then cover the seeds with more soil. Water the soil until it feels moist, then place your container garden in a sunny spot.

Growing the Pizza Garden

While your pizza garden grows, check the soil of each container daily to see if you need to water your plants. Press your fingers down two or three inches into the soil. If the soil feels dry, add enough water to make the soil moist. If the soil feels wet, do not add any water. Keep in mind that tomato plants grow better in soil that stays moist, while the herbs thrive when the soil is allowed to dry out between watering.

Using the Pizza Garden

Once your plants have grown, you can harvest them in the amounts needed to make a tasty pizza. Eating a pizza made from the tomatoes and herbs you have grown is not only fun and healthy, but tasty, too! The pizza garden shows just one way that green plants make life
