The purpose of this unity was to learn how new substances formed and what happened when they are formed. Some of the key ideas addressed in this unit are: chemical and physical reactions, the law of conservation of mass, and ionic/covalent bonding. In a chemical reaction, something new is created, different from what created it, a new substance is formed. In a physical reaction, the appearance of the object is changed, but nothing new is created. An example of a chemical reaction would be lighting paper on fire, you're creating ash, which is a new substance. An example of a physical reaction would be cutting a banana in half. It's still a banana, it just looks different. In a law of conservation of mass, it states that …show more content…
In a chemical reaction, a new substance is created, while in a physical reaction, the substance is just changed aesthetically. In a chemical reaction, the number of atoms on each side must be balanced, meaning that nothing is destroyed or created in the reaction. On pg 72 of the interactive notebook, there is a diagram of a chemical reaction showing a reaction between carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. On the reactant side of the reaction there is 1 carbon, 4 hydrogen, and 4 oxygen. On the product side, although it looks much different, there is still the exact same amount of each, meaning that it created something new (a chemical reaction), but stayed balanced. Also in a chemical reaction, we can control the product. On pg 74 of the interactive notebook there is a conclusion to an experiment where we controlled the reactants, to make the product different. To make the reaction bigger, we could add more reactants, if we wanted to make the reaction smaller we could put in less reactants. In the experiment you couldn’t just add a lot of one reactant, and not the other, as the reaction would only be as big as the smallest amount of reactants. That is what we learned about chemical and physical reactions in this
