Dogs usually will try to communicate two types of message “I want to interact with you” or “leave me alone” Dogs communicate through eye contact, facial expressions and body posture. However, it is also important to assess the situation as a hole when working out what your dog is trying to say.
A confident and friendly dog approach someone they do not know by slightly lowering their body posture, its head will be level with its back, ears will be tilted slightly down or backwards, its mouth slightly open and its tail may be wagging. If the dog knows the person it is greeting it will also make eye contact. Whilst a slightly insecure dog will approach a human with its tail lowered (although it may still be wagging) and its ears will be down. The head will be lowered and not making eye contact. This could be described as having a slightly guilty look.
