Explain How Does Marketing Shape Consumer Needs?

In my opinion, Marketing shapes consumer needs, besides reflecting them. From the definition of marketing, it is clear that Marketing is basically a process or activity which involves identifying the consumer needs and meeting them. Basically the marketers communicate with the consumers, take feedback, analyze the results and target the intended audience to market their products by delivering the value to the customers. In this way, Marketing reflects the need of consumers. However, it also shapes their needs through several marketing and advertising principles. Before producing any kind of product, companies research the customer’s tastes and preferences. They may vary depending on the geographical location, cultural preferences, and gender and age group differences as well. In this way marketing reflects the consumer’s needs. But every person is different from one …show more content…
Now a days many companies paying millions of dollars to celebrities to endorse their brands. In India, majority of the kids or college going people started drinking Boost (an energy drink) just because Sachin Tendulkar (the most famous cricket celebrity across the nation, in fact around the world) endorses it saying “Boost is the secret of my Energy”. Is it really true? Does Sachin really get energy from Boost? No one really cares about that. On that note, I want to conclude that marketing actually shapes the consumer needs (sometime even without our knowledge) besides delivering what customer wants. They drive the customers using differing mechanism. This may or may not yield profits initially, but once the target audience are reached, economical benefits will start improving there by creating brand value. Thus Marketing plays crucial role not only in just meeting the demands of consumer but also for impacting their decision making and wants as
