1. Describe any challenges you faced while taking the course for which you are applying to SI Lead. What were the challenges and how did you overcome them? BIO 1114 was a challenge for me personally because it was my first exposure to science at the college level. This true for many students. BIO 1114 taught me to believe in my ability to work hard in order to conquer any information that was put in my way. I remember watching my professor write the chemical reactions for cellular respiration, and thinking to myself I will never be a good scientist because I cannot learn that information. In order to overcome this challenge (which represents most challenges I had when dealing with hard classes) I had to do three main things. First figure …show more content…
In thinking about the students who typically take this course, what challenges may they face which you did not face? How will you help them overcome these challenges? Seeing students both in tutoring through the LASSO Center and tutoring through the group of students set up by Dr. French I have found that many students aren’t as driven to learn the material in the course because they could not engage with the material in an interesting way. The material presented in lecture format was not connecting with them in a way that motivated them to learn. This challenge can be overcome by figuring out what sparks a student’s interest. For example in LASSO tutoring I would often ask what students favorite sport was or what does the student want to do once the graduate in order to find areas the student in already encaged. By using examples from these areas to explain a concept I am able to channel that interest in basketball to now be projected onto photosynthesis for example. A student that is engaged in the material, and can understand how it is beneficial to their goals in life will be able to learn more material at a higher rate. This drive can easily any obstacle in the student’s

Any course with the designation “AP” sounded challenging, but an intensified class like AP Biology sounded more challenging, due to its extensive lab reports and difficult scientific concepts. Taking AP Biology felt like being a doctor, wearing a lab coat or writing a report for every lab we experimented with. AP Biology not only covered the human body at a molecular level, but also provided me the experience of what working in a lab truly felt like. The experience and the class fascinated me and helped me gain some practical experience with tools such as centrifuges or micropipettes. Like AP Biology, Anatomy/Physiology also provided me with lab experience in dissecting various organisms.…

The experiences in the Biology 230 course will certainly continue to influence me in my understand of and how I approach topics in following biology and science courses. The reason why I say this is that the process that information is taught in the lecture course was a bit different from how some other courses would normally be taught. Comparing this course to previously biology and chemistry courses, this course focuses on the why rather than what is the answer. This certainly helps as it makes up need to find a connection to why some is the way it is, which benefits many of the different topics that are taught through the course.…

Tuesday: Multimedia Production 2313 Being completely honest, on the first day of class I had no clue what to expect of this course. Just from the title and description of the course I was certain it would require technical and creative skills. Two things I do not have and after I read Dr. Matthews' email I knew this class would be intense, however, that did not intimidate me. Last semester was my most difficult semester. Last semester prepared me for this semester.…

The knowledge I continue to garner throughout this course will provide insurmountable benefits across all spectrums of life. For example, when working on presentations for school projects I now possess the knowledge of how to organize, deliver, and employ aids in a manner that will enable classmate to garner a greater understanding of the presentation while also promoting an overall memorable experience. Additionally, given my status as an instructor in my work center, I can now gauge the training audience to understand how to tailor a robust, informative style briefing that captures their attention. I would explain learning to someone who has not taken this class, as taking new information in and applying it to the world around you. I would tell them to learn the way they learn best, whether it is reading information or being hands on with an activity that teaches you the information. Once you have the information you can connect and understand the information and apply it to your work and assignments. Everyone learns different and you have to find how you learn in order to become a critical learner. This class has changed my views of learning by me thinking learning was just taking in new information and applying it to my assignments, but this class has showed me that learning is much more than that.…

Reading and writing is everywhere in this world and as teachers we must push our students to understand literacy no matter what content we are teaching. Literacy is included in all subjects, it might not be the main source of a certain subject but it is important in every subject. Other teachers might not understand that literacy is needed for every course that they teach. In the article Literacy and Language as Learning in Content-Area Classes: A Departure From "Every Teacher a Teacher of Reading" Douglas Fisher and Gay Ivey explains why literacy is important in every subject. TEACHING LABS AND RECITATIONS INTRODUCTION Labs and recitations complement the lecture component of a course. While the lab component of a course typically has a well-defined schedule of experiments to be conducted each week, the recitation is intended to allow students to discuss and obtain clarification of material presented in the formal lecture. Consequently, its structure is generally more flexible than a lab. Some courses may have both a lab and a recitation. While labs and recitations support the formal lecture, their importance, and hence the teaching assistant’s importance, in helping students achieve the overall learning objectives of the class should not be underestimated.…

When I first began this class I thought that this would be just another introductory class that is required to orient you to the expectations of the particular college. Now, after completing this class, I know that this is not the case. Personal Dimensions of Learning has been a great help, not only to my school work, but also in my daily life. Before taking this class, I thought that learning, and completing daily tasks, were mostly memorizing the order of the way things are supposed to be done and just completing the task. I never liked this strategy, but it always seemed to be the most convenient way to get things done at school, home, and work.…
