A common proverb states that “Experience is a comb which nature gives us when we are bald.” In Clouds by Aristophanes, the Chorus of Clouds willingly encourages Strepsiades’ to pursue his inconsiderate and selfish desires with the intention of steering him towards a dead-end. Then, assuming Strepsiades feels cornered in his egocentric workings, he will reflect on the actions that reeled him into the trap he made for himself. This is, at least, the outcome that the Clouds predicted; “so philosophize and cogitate,/ Intellectualize and ruminate./ Twist your thoughts, your mind must bend”. The Clouds encouraged Strepsiades to think through every possible circumstance or tactic that would liberate him of his responsibilities with the creditors.…

After Oedipus realizes he is blind to his own life he searches for answers at all costs, and as he finds out the truth it becomes a moment of anagnorisis for Oedipus. Forced to help Oedipus answer questions, the shepherd tells Oedipus who his real parents are, King Laius and Queen Jocasta, “Then--the child came from the house… of Laius.” (1240-1241). This moment represents anagnorisis since this revelation allows Oedipus to see the truth to his life and understand all the mysteries he could never answer, “O god--all come true, all burst to light!” (1306-1307).…

For my application paper, I will focus on the topics of Rubin’s “Four Tendencies” and Irvine, The Stoics and Control. In the reading of Rubin’s framework, I learned that people usually fall within one of the four tendencies mentioned. Our inner and outer expectations play a huge role on our habits. The way we respond to our expectations classifies which tendency we fall under. “Our Tendency colors the way we see the world and therefore has enormous consequences for our habits” (Rubin, “The Four Tendencies,” 18).…
