Experiment Rats: Are They Right Or Wrong?

Discussion Since the experiment is now over I can see whether or not my hypotheses were right or wrong and whether or not the P-Value accepts or rejects the null hypothesis. I predicted that the control group would have the higher average body weight than the experimental rats, in this case my hypothesis was correct. Because the experimental rat was an adolescent it showed different symptoms than the adult rat. If the adult rat had hypothyroidism then they would gain weight, but because the experimental rat was an adolescent rat with hypothyroidism it did not gain weight. Therefore, the control group had a higher average body weight. The P-Value for this also fails to reject the null hypothesis. My other prediction was that the experimental rat will have a higher metabolic rate, this hypothesis …show more content…
When I looked at the data results and the graphs it shows that the control group had a higher metabolic rate. The P-Value for this hypothesis rejects the null hypothesis and is the only significant P-Value. My next prediction was the experimental rat would have the higher testis weight and this hypothesis was correct. The experimental rate had hormone injected causing the testis to grow and become bigger than the average size. My last prediction was that the thyroid weight would be higher in the experimental rat and that hypothesis was correct as well. The testis and thyroid weight was higher in the experimental rat because thyroid hormone regulates growth, development and metabolism in tissues causing the testis and thyroid to grow. In the case with the metabolic rate, the symptoms are different in adults and adolescents so the thyroid hormone did no speed up the metabolic rate in the experimental rat. Again, the P-Value fails to

The Scopes trial was the case against John Scopes, a biology teacher in Dayton Tennessee. Scopes was charged for defying Tennessee's newly placed Butler Act. This case is what catapulted the dispute of creationism versus evolution and how it should be taught in schools. The outcome of this 1925 trial affected the rest of the 19th century extensively, however as the 20th century neared, the effect became less prevalent. John Scopes was a local biology teacher and was arrested for teaching evolution, the "Scopes Monkey Trial" was the case against him.…

“ The issue is not whether there is variation, but whether the variation is significant”. During your research variation will always occur, it is up to the research to determine the threshold, when does variation become significant or just coincidental. One of the most commonly used Confidence Interval is 95%, if the sample is due to coincidence, the difference is not significant we will fail to reject the null hypothesis, however if the difference is significant we will reject the null hypothesis. The null hypothesis, written as H0 states that nothing new has happened and the old theory still stands true. To determine if the variation is significant or coincidental we observed the p value, if the p value is greater than the assigned alpha…

My STEAM Expo experiment was testing which hamster food gives hamsters the most energy to hamsters. I tested three store brand foods: Carefresh Complete, Sunseed, and Nibble Rings. I also tested one that I made based off of the research that I did prior to the experiment. I thought that this project was perfect for my three hamsters, because they are all very tired and lazy. I also think that other people can use my type of food so that their hamsters can be energetic, too.…

Power to Right Powerless to Wrong The difference between doing what is right and what is wrong is based on how powerful or powerless a person may feel. Henry David Thoreau said that, “The only obligation which I have a right to assume, is to do at any time what I think is right.” People, usually, do what they feel is right. In “Perils of Obedience Experiment” doing what is right is all based on how much power someone has and how the person felt at the given time.…

In the article, the author claims that children growing up in low-income families tend to have higher rate of obesity, which implies a negative correlation between income and obesity rate. To support his point, the writer used the model built by University of Michigan Health System based on the data from 111,799 Massachusetts students. The model presents that “every 1 percent increasing in low-income status is associated with 1.17 percent increase in rates of obese students”, which strongly advocates the correlation between the two factors: the lower the family’s income is, the higher possibility for the child to be overweight. There are several explanations can help to illustrate this correlation.…

Discussion: The specific purpose for this study was to see how enzyme activity would change as there was a change in temperature and pH. Both temperature and pH were hypothesized to have an affect on enzyme activity. Each had an optimal temperature. At this point, the rate of enzyme activity would stop increasing and begin to decrease. For temperature, it was hypothesized that the optimal temperature would be 48°C.…

We chose to conduct this experiment because both Amber and I are interested in athletics and the science side of it. There have been several researchers studying the effects of caffeine, and they believe it can enhance athletic performance and agility in sports. Because of this we believe if caffeine levels are increased, then time taken to run a lap will decrease when time is a function of caffeine level. To test this we will have a group of ten subject male and female who around the same athletic capabilities. Then, we will give them a set volume of liquid at different caffeine levels to see if the subjects running time changes with the caffeine.…
