The objective of the Isopods Lab was to figure out if the Pillbugs favored the wet environment or a dry environment. After reading the pre-lab report on Pillbugs, my hypothesis was that “If water is added to an Isopods environment, then the isopods will favor the wet environment.” By using two groups of Isopods, one group was put into a dry environment and the other had one drop of water into their dish. After ten minutes of observing the Isopods, the results showed that the Pill Bugs prefer the wet environment more. As time went on, the bugs in the wet environment survived longer than the Isopod in the dry environment.…
Subject Organisms For this experiment, I used Daphnia magna and Daphnia pulex that was cultured from stocks from Aquatic Bio Systems Inc. (Fort Collins, CO). Each species was cultured individually in 900 mL glass jars filled with moderately hard water. The data collected in this experiment provided efficient evidence to support the hypothesis which was that both the allelochemicals caffeine and kava would affect the heart beats per minute in the Daphnia magna. This means that the heart rate of Daphnia magna was affected by the allelochemicals. Caffeine raised the beats per minute, while kava drastically decreased the number of heart beats in a given minute. As seen in Figure 1 kava decreased the heart rate to -46 beats per minute, while the caffeine raised the heart beats to 26 per minute. This supports the conclusion that the stimulation humans receive off of caffeine has a similar effect in Daphnia magna.…

In one petri dish I used 15ml of pure distilled water (the typical environment of daphnia) as my control to look back on and compare to my experimental group my altered variables. In my three other dishes I started with 15 ml of pure water, 2-3 daphnia, and introduced 2 ml of harmful substance ( Prestone :antifreeze,Bayer Advanced: pesticide, and Malaboro :cigarette ash).
