Experiential Reflection of Council for Exceptional Children Standards This paper presents the author’s reflections on her personal experiences completing her Master of Education in Special Education degree at Lamar University, Beaumont, TX from Fall 2014 to Spring 2016 as related to the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Initial Special Educator Preparation Standards. The paper summarizes the seven CEC initial preparation standards that address the following areas: Learner Development and Individual Learning Differences, Learning Environments, Curricular Content Knowledge, Assessment, Instructional Planning and Strategies, Professional Learning and Practice, and Collaboration. I learned from the required textbook, The Life Span: Human Development for Helping Professionals by Broederick and Blewitt (2015) how humans grow and develop in all aspects of their life, what factors affect their growth and development, and how to support them in all stages of their development. My weekly application assignments provided me with opportunities to apply in various scenarios my knowledge and skills related to learner development and individual learning differences. The reading assignments from the textbook, Functional Behavioral Assessment and Function-Based Intervention: An Effective, Practical Approach by Umbreit, Ferro, Liaupsin, and Lane (2007) taught me how to design, evaluate, and implement a functional behavioral assessment and a function-based intervention. My weekly project assignments provided me with valuable exercises to demonstrate my knowledge and skills related to learning environments. I learned how to record, define, and analyze behavior; plan to provide positive behavioral supports; assess a problem behavior with antecedent not conforming to effective practice and consequence maintaining the target behavior, and complete the Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) and the Behavior Intervention Plan
