Cassie McCollum--Experiential Learning Essay This Fall, I volunteered to work at the Cobb EMC Annual Planning Meeting with Safe Kids of Cobb County. I heard about this opportunity when a couple of professors in the Public Health Department at Kennesaw State University promoted it via email. It was on a Saturday and I was off from work, so I decided to volunteer. I did not know what to expect, but I drove to the Cobb County Fairground early that morning ready for anything. It was still dark when I arrived, so I had to look around for the area we were to meet. I really thought that there would be a lot of students from KSU, but I was the only one. However, there were other volunteers, employees, and interns to help out. I expected a busy day with lots of people and that's what I got plus a lot more. …show more content…
Viva Price. She gave me my volunteer shirt and I headed to change. I was one of the first to arrive, so I had a bit of a wait. Pretty soon assignments were handed out. I had the pedestrian safety station. Ms. Price explained to me how to set up the game and my area. I had a spinner board with different situations for the kids to answer correctly. All the situations related to road safety. They included questions about bike, pedestrian, and car safety. When the child was done answering the question they were allowed to choose a giveaway provided by Cobb EMC. If the child choose the wrong answer I explained the right answer to them. My station was pretty busy. I saw hundreds of people on this

It held activities for people with or without physical limitations including wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, rock climbing, and even scuba diving! I volunteered for this event rather than the other 5 events because I wanted to contribute to helping the people in our city of Philadelphia. It was amazing to see how many people came out to not only support the event, but also to participate.…

When I first learned about osteopathic medicine I was attracted to the idea of the holistic approach of working with the patient to treat the whole body and not just the disease. This osteopathic philosophy is supplemented with what I had learned during my time as a Public Health student where the focused was on heath education with an emphasis on preventative medicine to help the individual and community. I came to this realization when I was observing an osteopathic family medicine physician interacting with a diabetic patient that was non-compliant with his medication that came in for a cut on his calf that was not healing properly. The physician proceeded to explain how by not taking his diabetic medication, affected his calf from healing…

I enjoyed the Freshman Cultural Event. Although trying to get everyone together to take a picture was pretty difficult, when we were done, we had a good time. When we got to the cafeteria for our dinner, I was shocked. We had scalloped potatoes, steamed vegetables, and a slice of meat. Let’s not forget the cheesecake.…

This past Saturday, I went to deaf awareness day at White Bear Lake High school. I had been eyeballing the event for some time since it seemed like a good way to see what the Deaf community is like on a larger scale than a single theater performance or game. I drove with Beth, and we ended up bumping into additional classmates on our way into the event. The six of us spent our time walking around to the many booths and asking questions as we went. I was surprised by the variety of presenters.…

Theory is Everywhere: Kolb’s Theory of Experiential Learning “College is hard, but dental school will break you”, is the first statement I heard from a 4th year student when I first started working with students as the graduate assistant for the Office of Student Affairs, within the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. I was shocked and confused by this statement because standing before me was a student who had graduated with a 3.95 grade point average in their undergraduate study and was in the top of their class in dental school. I asked them to clarify and they responded by explaining that the first two years are all bookwork with a few practical skills and the last two years are all practical work with little bookwork. They told me…

Since the beginning of my freshman year I have been actively a part of a club known as Make-A-Wish; which strives to grant the wishes of terminally ill children with life threatening diseases. This club offered me not only a chance to fit into a new school, but also do what I love and do best, help people. I not only learned the purpose of helping others, but I also learned a lot about myself. Through determination, hope, and hard work I have pushed through the problems to bring back the reason for this club; making a difference.…

Some people were there just to socialize, or to be the driver for the students who can’t drive. The interactions most noticeable were the physical interactions of people hugging or shaking hands with people they know or are just meeting. Like the student who was in the corner trying to get a girls number. He opened with how are you I am …..,, and then shook this girls hand and asked her for her number. The sense of touch of him shaking her hand seemed to do the trick as she probably comes from a cultural background where that is considered to be gentleman like.…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…

Medicine fascinated me even when I was a child. I remember being about eight years old when my pediatrician asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. Without hesitation, I told him I wanted to be a doctor. I view medicine as discovery, the chance to learn the science surrounding the human body and develop the skills that will allow me to heal others. As I entered college, I pursued experiences that exposed me to the world of medicine, becoming more involved within my community and university.…
