Summary: The Importance Of Teamwork

There is an African Proverb that says “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” This quote resonates with much of my life and parallels my experience with Duke’s Team Fuqua culture. Additionally, it aligns with the synergetic dynamic necessary in healthcare to provide coordinated care to patients. I witnessed how important teamwork is in healthcare last year when I hopped on the train from D.C. to New York within 6 hours after hearing that my diabetic, blind grandmother was rushed to the hospital for the third time in one week. When I arrived at the hospital, I was amazed at how disjointed the care was and how many gaps in communication existed among the care coordinators who assisted her. I remained calm in trying to piece together the information we were receiving, while my Jamaican and overly aggressive grandmother vividly expressed her frustrations with her care. While my engineering profession and uneasiness at the sight of my own blood will not help me directly contribute to saving a life, I have found that the skill set acquired from an MBA has provided countless individuals with the ability to determine alternate ways to enhance the delivery of care. Learning business is a gateway for me to understand how to ease the burden for families (including my own) by creating services that will enable individuals to better understand how to care for themselves. Fuqua’s robust Health Sector Management program is a natural fit to help me identify the imperative connection between business and healthcare with deep dive offerings like the HSM Bootcamp. Pursuing my MBA in a city where a world-class academic and health care system resides further provides opportunities for me to expand my leadership experience in the field and address issues in real-time through programs like Duke University Hospital Experiential Learning
