Then, all the other instrument were jumped in at the same time which giving me a big surprise, and the melody was also change to disjunct. The accented articulation make me feels really exciting. This past Friday, I had the opportunity to see Dr. Rachel Whitcomb's performance in PNC Recital Hall, titled "Back on my Feet Again. " This was a country, blues, and bluegrass concert coming from a vocalist and professor with a classical learning background. It centered around a theme that although a knowledge of classical techniques is important for any singer, they should still try to incorporate their own unique musical techniques into their teaching or performance repertoire. The beginning of the concert featured a digital presentation that questioned what "appropriate" music should be considered and who has the authority to decide what should be performed by formal singers. The questions were all rhetorical and would later be answered by Dr. Whitcomb throughout her performance.…

The dynamics are much like the tempo. The dynamics go from piano to fortissimo. This shocked the audience’s nerves. They didn’t know what to expect from the dissonant notes, and how loud the music was going to be because it was constantly changing. There were many instruments used for the piece.…

On Friday, July 10th, the local instrumental jazz group Yuma Jazz Company played at Lutes Casino for a couple of hours. The instrumentation was fairly standard for a jazz group, with trumpet, saxophone, guitar, double bass, and drums (I believe those were electric). The guitar and bass, along with the drums, served as a sort of basso continuo, generally backing the horns, but occasionally taking up the melody for themselves, resulting in a texture that was thinly polyphonic. Also noticeable was the “fabulous light up tip jar,” a colorful accompaniment to their music. The concert ran from 7 to 9 PM, so I went in not only with the intention of listening to the group but also with a good meal in mind.…

This song has a wide dynamic range due to the “extremely soft passages as well as extremely loud passages” (Elements of Music). The rhythm patterns change throughout this piece. It begins to slow then changes to a faster pace. Along with changing rhythmic patterns there is a change in melody. The song changes from low to high pitches.…

As soon as the concert began the crowd took their seats and stayed quiet in order to enjoy the music and show respect for the orchestra and the musicians playing. At first, I was skeptical about going to a classical music concert because people often think of it as boring and think they do not know much about the genre. Upon researching the programs and listening to pieces, I realized that many sounded familiar and realized classical music is played very often in television and used in many ways. Once I got to the concert and the orchestra…

The concert that I attended was the Redlands Community Orchestra at Redlands High School Clock Auditorium. The orchestra consisted of three pieces which were Fanfare to the Common Man by Aaron Copland, Les Preludes by Franz Liszt, and Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67 by Ludwig van Beethoven. These pieces are capturing pieces of art and history that surpass time and yet are still know in this modern era. The composers were well known artist that created a kind of movement in music history and became well known for their incredible pieces and symphony’s.…

At measure 91, the flute countermelody and the trumpet melodies were not together at all. The flute section could have listened to the trumpet section more, as their notes outlined the main melody. At measure 114 the flute soli sounded very blended and clear, and when the rest of the band came in at measure 122 it sounded very natural. They did not ruin the gentle quality of the section, coming in softly and smoothly. The final section of the piece, “Back to the Future”, was a little disjointed rhythmically.…

The rhythm of the song was consistent, here and there is ranged but nothing to force. The tempo to me felt a slower at the start. Then gradually toward the end it picked up. I felt as the harmony of this as very complex. This was a familiar to me, later on recognized it as a fragment part from ‘Break Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light’ which was written by Johann Sebastian Bach, which I have heard many times at church.…

I’m sitting alone in the front pew of the University of Virginia Chapel on a cold December night. In front of me there is a tall metal stand with a set of bongos perched precariously atop. Behind me sits the entire crowd of the sold out Virginia Women’s Chorus Candlelight Concert. When I arrived in Charlottesville months earlier, I could have never expected to be here. I have just finished performing a piece with the chorus minutes earlier, when a member of the chorus steps forward and addresses the audience to explain and introduce the next piece.…

It was held at the Redpath Hall, a building located on McTavish street. The Redpath Hall was first dedicated for a library building, but is now taken charge by the Schulich School of Music. The Hall is very charming with its high selling that contains thick dark brown carved wodden beams that covers the intire ceiling and gives warmth to the room.…

The instruments are all moving quickly and playing different and conflicting parts all over one another, which creates an interesting and energetic sound. I liked having this energetic and lively section towards the end of the piece. It created anticipation and excitement while listening, while also revisiting some of the initial musical sections from the first movement. I thought that the revisiting of initial musical pieces tied the whole thing together, by showing the connection through the first and last movements. I thought it was interesting that this movement ended with a downbeat, as it initially started with an…
