Case Study Analysis The case study "Job Redesign for Expanded HIM Functions." By Elizabeth Layman, presented at the 2011 AHIMA Convention Proceedings looks at issues in the health care information management (HIM) industry. Employees and managers were struggling with too much work that was addressed by everyone working longer and harder. Jobs roles and responsibilities and the way jobs were structured needed to be changed in order to relieve the workload. It was also recognized that work would continue to build incrementally over time so the solution had to be one that offered flexibility to evolve over time.

The principles of job enrichment were applied by giving employees more control over how they performed their jobs. Issues such as low morale were addressed by setting goals for job enrichment, changing tasks, roles and responsibility.
By enriching jobs, employees were more motivated to work together and adopt processes and communication was much more frequent. HIS departments saw an increase in employee suggestions and feedback that improved processes and identified issues as they arose rather than after they became problems.
Tools were provided to highly monitor employees, workflows and processes. These included periodic reviews or processes and systems, performance management reviews, job diagnostic surveys, personnel reports, job description reviews, surveys and various flowcharts.
