People should not have wild animals as pets. As stated by “Killer Pets” by Blair Rainsford, “ Many [exotic pets] need special food, space to roam, and lots of attention. Exotic pets are often kept in small cages by themselves. This is cruel, says Coppola”(Rainsford 18). This shows that people usually don’t have the right materials or the amount of time to take care of an exotic animal. Any animal should have the right means to live correctly, even if it is a dog or a lion. In many cases, an exotic animal can only get their necessary commodities in their natural wild habitat where they are meant to be. They can give humans many diseases, from measles to monkeypox”(Rainsford 18). This is just one of the many ways exotic pets are much more dangerous than a normal household pet. Of course normal household pets can still give their owners diseases and parasites like fleas, but the diseases of exotic pets are on a much larger scale. Their diseases could be from their normal habitat, somewhere the owners most likely have never been. So, the owner’s body will react much more severely due to the foreignness of the disease. Also, if the disease is uncommon in their region, they probably have never had a vaccination. This gives the owner an even greater chance of contracting the disease, and it will also increase the severity due to the body never experiencing the disease. Furthermore, as “Killer Pets” by Blair Rainsford states, “ The behavior of exotic pets can be violent and hard to predict. Their actions might be natural in the wild-but not in your home”(Rainsford 18). Simply, exotic pets are meant to be in the wild. Their actions are driven by self-protection and survival.
