Exotic Pet Trade

The exotic pet trade is a multi-billion dollar industry in the U.S. and while some wild pets are bred in captivity, many are taken from their native habitats. Millions of animals are forced into the exotic pet trade every year for the purpose of becoming someone's pet or entertaining the masses in a circus or roadside zoo. People are enthralled with the idea to own an exotic animal as a pet but as the animal grows up, the owner soon realizes that they can no longer take care of the animal and many people just set them loose in the wild, resulting in disrupting the environment and putting humans in danger.
The diseases that animals carry can pose as a huge health risk for humans. Exotic animals pose serious health risks to humans. “Many exotic

“Exotic pets that do survive release and establish themselves will inevitably interfere with or disrupt the surrounding ecosystem. Many non-native species that begin to colonize an area compete for resources with native species and depending on their size, prey on them. In many cases, invasive species that establish their dominance in an area can have irreversible effects on the local habitat. In addition to damaging balanced ecosystems, invasive species also harbor foreign disease and can become public safety hazards ("What Happens When People Release Exotic Animals Into the Wild").” Animals that do not naturally belong in one region are all of a sudden introduced and slaughter the nearby prey and unbalance the environment. This creates an overflow of a certain species or lack thereof, and it can turn into a big problem. “While some wild pets have been bred in captivity, many exotic animals are plucked directly from their native habitats. The stress of being violently removed from their homes causes some animals to die before they ever reach a private residence. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) reports that infant animals are the most desirable and earn dealers the largest profits. Poachers will often kill the protective mother first so that it's easier to capture the young …show more content…
“The only way to stop the proliferation of the exotic animal trade and the suffering in it causes is to stop the breeding, bartering, trading, and sale of exotic animals for personal profit and amusement, and to teach the public that wild animals belong in the wild, not in our homes ("Articles:").” If buyers no longer have interest in buying a baby tiger instead of a house cat, then the dealers will have no one to sell to and the market price for the exotic animals will go down and eventually the business will cease to exist. “Join Endangered Species International to ban illegal trade of endangered animals ("Help Stop the Endangered Pet Trade").” You can donate as little as five dollars to help them track down dealers and put a stop to the trade. Also instead of making clothes out of the animals unique fur, you can just use faux fur that resembles the real thing. Ending the exotic animal trade will help animals all over the world avoid slaughter and keep nature in

They say if the owner is willing to take on the extra responsibility and treat the animal well, then there shouldn't be any problems. However, that simply isn't true. Owning an exotic animal takes a great level of commitment. Supporters of this argument totally disregard that exotic animals are considered exotic because one; they are undomesticated, wild animals; and two, the requirements that they need to survive is quite extreme compared to the common pets we have today.…

Most of these animals that I mentioned (except for dogs, cats, rats, and mice) are being fed the animals from their own farms. Recently, the last fifty years within America animals are being fed disgusting things like deceased animals, feathers, skin, hair, hooves, blood, manure, plastics, drugs, chemicals, and unhealthy amounts of grains. This results in health problems for humans and animals from digestion to disease. If these problems got out to the public of other nations that trade this would be…

Breeders Neglect of Reptiles and Amphibians There has been a problem in the commercial reptile and amphibian pet trade; mass breeders. They use mass farming methods to spew out hundreds and hundreds of frogs, lizards, turtles, and so many other animals. They put them in large, overcrowded plastic bins and leave them there with no food or water. They deny care to the injured ones, who got injured due to the nature of these animals; they are violent to each other. They let them slowly rot away because it would be too much of a burden to simply care for these animals, or remove the sick ones at least.…

In reading the USA Today articles “Wilds Animals Aren’t Pets” and “Opposing View: Let People Own Exotic Animals”, the following essays on the keeping of exotic and wild animals as pets were first published in USA Today in a "Today's Debate" column (2011) (Wyrick, 2014). When we objectively analyze the strengths and weakness of each essay, the argument for not having an exotic animal for a pet is demonstrated as follows. So some people may wonder why we shouldn’t keep exotic animals as pets. We should not keep exotic animals as pets because we need to protect the public, remove wild animals from owners, and wild rare exotic animals need to be in environments of which they are accustomed to.…

Another reason why some people have unfit places for exotic pets is because they do not have the right medical treatment for the animal, if injured. A lot of owners could not afford medical treatment. Exotic animals should not be owned by anyone, because they some people are completely unprepared for the…

Ivory is a hard creamy-white substance, typically used to make jewelry and other ornaments, that composes elephant tusks. Due to the high price of ivory killing elephants for their tusks has become quite a lucrative business which has resulted in the African elephant being brought to the brink of extinction. The prohibitionists dominate the ivory trade debate, however is a ban on ivory trade really all that beneficial. I argue that an ivory trade ban is in fact counterintuitive and brings with it more detriments than benefits and a legal ivory trade is a far better solution to the elephant poaching crisis. Allow me to begin by clearing up some common misconceptions about legal ivory trade.…

The live export of animals is a process in which animals, mostly cattle, sheep and goats, are sent overseas. Australia in particular ships millions of animals yearly overseas. Exporting live animals is wrong and needs to stop. The outcome of this exportation is tortuous and results in illness causing death for most animals, and those who do survive are subject to being slaughtered in countries with incompetent laws against cruelty. Although there is no ‘humane’ way to kill animals, Australian livestock are being treated especially inhumane in the way they are killed by importing countries.…

A similar law has been passed in New York and New Jersey that focuses on ivory and/or rhino horns. However this will affect people who already have antique jewelry despite the length of owning the jewelry. Others believe this law to be too strict and the actions to show proof of ownership, age and that the product contains less than 15% of animal species would be too difficult. There are two main points that would help this law pass which is that it will close or hinder major ports that have been used for animal smuggling.…

According to National Geographic, the article “Exotic Pets”, former exotic wildlife owner, Tim Harrison claims, “(I) will never again own anything wild or exotic./ (I) believe ownership of all potentially dangerous exotic animals should be banned”. Therefore even a former owner of wolves, snakes, lions, and bears agrees that having possession of wild animals can be extremely dangerous to a person considering exotic pets can be unpredictable. Furthermore, owners of exotic pets do not realize the risk and danger they put on the community for housing these exotic creatures. In National Geographic, the article “Exotic Pets” Lauren Slater writes, “A man named Terry Thompson let 50 of his wild animals, including lions and tigers, out of their cages and enclosures before killing himself”. This quote depicts an example of a man from Ohio, who let out 50 wild animals, causing a dangerous situation for citizens living in Muskingum County.…
