Exotic Animals in Burke County? One night an exotic 40-pound cat named Tyra ran off in downtown Morganton and the owners needed people to help find her. Who knew that you could have an exotic cat that almost looked like a cheetah in Burke County? Did we allow exotic animals at the time? Tyra’s owners had her for four years and as I was not aware that you could have exotic animals in Burke County.…
The act of holding wild animals in captivity, specifically for the purpose of entertainment has led many people to associate their abnormal behaviors to psychological suffering. Local zoos and aquariums seem to draw most of the attention from the general public about captive wild animal rights and welfare; however, many forget that traveling circuses are just as much at fault. Coming into one’s hometown once or twice a year, the traditional circus puts on a ‘spectacular show’ using wild animals as part of the main attractions. In essence, they serve as the living props for the actors and actresses that run the show. Among these animals, the most iconic of them all, are the Asian and African elephants.…
In "The Stripes Will Survive" by Jacqueline Adams, "The Zoos Go Wild" by Nicholas Nirgiotis and Theodore Nirgiotis, and the video “Behind The Scenes with the National Zoo’s Lion Cubs”, all of the texts claim that the role of zoos is to protect animals from extinction or from harmful things in the wild. Whether certain animals have potentially fatal diseases or are disabled in some way, zoo keepers are there to protect the animals and help them grow and strive in areas where they are not skilled. In "The Stripes Will Survive", the text explains what specialists are doing to prevent the extinction of Siberian tigers. Two twin Siberian tigers are included in the story to help the text flow into saying what is being done to help these endangered species. This nonfictional story is an example of how the role of zoos is to protect animals.…
The souless Chinese are at it again. It's bad enough that they steal pets, then sit around laughing as they watch the the dog screaming in pain as it gets boiled alive, but it seems China never fails to show the world what a souless, decrepit society they really are. Some historians say the Great Wall of China was built to keep the world from entering... I believe the wall was built to keep this disgusting mnoralless society in and therebykeeping the world safe from this repugnant society.…

Stray animals “There are about 70 million strays living in the US. Of this 70 million, only about six to eight million cats and dogs enter the nation’s 3,500 shelters every year. Nearly half of all animals that arrive in U.S. shelters are euthanized because there is a lack of space and adopters, amounting to roughly 2.7 million dead animals every year or five out of every ten dogs and seven out of every ten cats – that’s like 80,000 animals per week” (Facts about Pet Homelessness). Those statistics are something that I don’t like seeing.…
(SOUND) This is not the roaring of a lion attacking his prey, neither is the lion from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer logo… It is from a lion crying in pain or a sad lion. Captivity makes big cats go crazy. The stress of the unnatural environment and/or pressure to perform causes some big cats to hurt and even mutilate themselves.…
Lions are the only cats that live in groups, which are called prides. Prides are family units that may include up to three males, a dozen or so females, and their young. All of a pride's lionesses are related, and female cubs typically stay with the group as they age. Young males eventually leave and establish their own prides by taking over a group headed by another male. Only male lions boast manes, the impressive fringe of long hair that encircles their heads.…
The vast majority of those animals are taken in the wild, usually a whole family or colony at a time. According to The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), “In 2003, the San Diego Wild Animal Park and Lowry Park Zoo captured 11 African elephants, a species designated as threatened, from their natural habitats in Swaziland.” Not only did this cause the animals “psychological trauma” (PETA) due to being torn away from their home and families, they are often captured at a young age because it is easier to capture them and they bring in higher profit. Most feral beings have rarely, if ever, had eyes lay upon them, so abruptly introducing them to hundreds or thousands of eyes a day would be an extreme culture shock causing adrenaline induced panic and rage. Taking them to a new environment also quickly deteriorates their health as a result of a sudden shift in the air quality, the weather, the season length and harshness degree, the differences in bacteria, and many other things.…
Endangered LionsHave you even thought about what the world would look like without one of it’smost iconic and beloved animal, the African Lion? Well, it’s sad to say that the Africanlion’s endangerment has been made official. Due to a history of poaching and decliningliving space, the West African Lion has officially been marked as endangered which hasput it under the protection of the US endangered species act. Although there is alreadysomewhat of a movement towards preserving these lions, it’s not enough. People needto start respecting the Lions lives and habitats as it is a crucial species in Africa’secosystem and tourist attractions, or one day we will live in a world where the thought oflions is a thing of the past.…

Exotic animals are not pets. Would you like to have a snake crawling through your house? Or a jaguar lying on your couch waiting to bother with you and then attack? Titi monkeys, lemurs, seahorses, great green macaws, white bengal tigers, scorpions, and crocodiles are only some of the large list of animals that live with people and share their day to day life. They are kept as regular pets, even if they are not happy, safe or obtained legally.…
Numerous people believe owning an exotic pet, such as a tiger or a lion would be fine, since some people view these exotic animals as normal average pets. However, not many Americans take into consideration the effects these exotic animals can cause to humans and to the animals themselves. In National Geographic, the author of the article,“Exotic Pets”, Lauren Slater, presents a graph to show that 66% of exotic animals are owned privately, 28% of the animals are owned by the zoo, and 6% of the animals are owned by the circus. The percentages shown above represent the total amount of exotic pets being held captive without a license or a permit, which is 96%, from 1990 all the way up to 2013. This statement alone gives the following…
What a child fails to see, is the reality of wildlife animals in their natural habitat. Investigations have lead to the discovery of many issues, such as an owner of a zoo sliced a growth off the face of one of the animals in its petting zoo with a penknife, without any anaesthetic, rather than take it to the vet. Another zoo that was investigated by the Captive Animals’ Protection Society, feeds animals stale bread and cakes as the majority of their daily diet. Also, just last year another investigation revealed that a large safari park kept its big cats locked in small and dilapidated enclosures for up to 18 hours a day; not being as active as a wild animal normally should, shortens their lifespan…
The tiger is the largest of the 37 species of cats in the world and unfortunately has recently become the most endangered of all the large wild cats. All tigers face two major threats. One is habitat destruction. This not only results in less territory for the cats to live in but also leaves the tigers' territory fragmented into separate islands making is hard for tigers to mate, which make it difficult for the species to survive. Conservation efforts are often aimed at creating sanctuaries, which are connected by safe corridors, which will allow tigers to reach each other.…
