Introduction
As life goes on, people get older. Older people tend to get weaker as time goes on and they also become less physically active. Over the past few years, the population of people older than sixty is growing faster than any other age group (Labra, 2015). When we think of the elderly, we do not expect them to be in the best of shape. However, they need to be active so they can live a healthy life until the end. Exercise is very important for every age group. When we think of exercise, we might think of running on a treadmill or lifting weights in a gym. However, older adults might not be able to perform these tasks because their bodies have lost many key aspects throughout their lives and this can cause problems with their joints and bones.
When we think of the elderly population, we do not think of them as being physically fit. Everyone needs to participate in physical activity to stay healthy and live a better lifestyle. However, older people cannot perform the exercises younger people do because their bodies become weaker over time and they lose motivation. Many older adults also have health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and arthritis. …show more content…
Creating an exercise program for a specific population can be challenging because you need to include exercises that should focus on a certain population. I have chosen to combine strength and cardio training for my population. I think older adults should always have a small or light workload during their exercise because if they work too hard or move too fast, it can cause them pain and long term damage to their body. I have chosen to use strength training in my program because I think the main problem in the elderly population is sarcopenia or better known as muscle loss with the aging process. I think strength training with free weights that are light, will help improve muscle function and strength in older
