1. Why should I exercise?
It is the most cost-effective and painless treatment available to us. It is better than many health supplements and drugs. Nevertheless, it has been neglected by many for too long. As such, many are suffering tremendously from various forms of medical illnesses. Research has shown that with regular exercise, there is a 50 per cent reduction in the risk of death associated with heart attack. Of course, not all medical conditions are attributable to a lack of exercise, but regular exercise can reduce the chance of you getting heart disease, certain types of cancer, diabetes, and other illnesses. Research has also shown that exercise can increase self-esteem and prevent you from ‘losing your mind’

Certain conditions such as osteoporosis (weak bones) are associated with the lack of weight-bearing activities. You need a balance of both endurance and weight-bearing exercises. It does not mean you must be using dumb-bells in order to perform weight-bearing exercise. Regular push-ups are a form of weight-bearing exercise.

8. I am still young and healthy. Is there any benefit in doing regular exercise?
Yes. Studies have shown that regular exercise helps those who are as young as 5 years old if they exercise regularly. On its own, a sedentary lifestyle (i.e. watching TV and sitting in front of a computer screen) increases the risk of premature death. Apart from experiencing the benefits already mentioned in this chapter, students might find they can study more effectively when they have sufficient exercise and sleep.

9. I am 65 years old. Is there still much benefit if I exercise regularly?
Yes. Even for the elderly, exercise helps to keep the mind sharp and the body fit. Senior citizens who stay active are likely to be independent for a much longer period of time. Hence, they may end up delaying the need to go into a nursing home. Exercise benefits people of all ages. Unless you have special conditions where you have been advised not to carry out normal activities, there are really no good reasons for you not to be active if you are well. Research has shown that people who have been unfit and who then become physically active could have more than fourty per cent risk reduction of premature death compared to those who do not change their lifestyle. The greatest benefit is seen for those who were once unfit and then became active. Some exercise is better than none. More exercise is better than some. No exercise is worst of all.

11. Can oral supplements replace the need for regular exercise?
There is no comparison between the two. Regular exercise is far more effective than supplements are in many ways. It is even more effective than a number of medicines in preventing many non-communicable diseases. If a healthy individual has a balanced and healthy diet, it is generally not necessary for him or her to take additional supplements.

12. Why am I still gaining weight if I am performing regular exercise?
Exercise does not guarantee a lean body. Weight loss (or gain) depends on the intensity and duration of the exercise. Besides, it is important to restrict the calorie (food energy) intake whilst being physically active.
