Over the course of a 5 week period, a goal was determined with an older adult in how they would like to promote a healthier lifestyle for themselves. In this case, Mrs. W is an 85 year old woman living in a two story house with her husband D. She volunteers at the breakfast program at Prince St. School once a week as well as being involved with church activities. She is quite healthy for her age other than a few set backs in the last five years such as a mini stroke and congestive heart failure. Mrs. W noted that keeping her weight managed and increasing her physical activity was her main priority so that is what her health protection promotion plan is directly centred around.
The older one ages the more important it is in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Mrs. W is relatively healthy for her age though she has some slight improvements that she wants to work on to improve her health. Mrs. W found that walking was the easiest form of exercise on her body though she was open to trying new forms of physical activity such as yoga. While there are many benefits to practicing yoga it generally focuses on keeping your balance as you hold each pose, “Adopting yoga as a strategy may aid in the development of awareness of the body through strengthening poses and breathing techniques as it assumes a stable stance (Jeter**)”. Although yoga can be used for a number of different health related benefits, both mentally and physically, it can be very useful to older adults who are not able to do much physically demanding activities.
