There are multiple benefits of engaging in physical activity throughout the lifespan. Engaging in a physically active lifestyle results in an increase in blood flow and cardiovascular fitness. Exercise has the ability to not only reduce the effects of aging but to decrease the development of diseases. Maintaining an intellectually engaging and physically active lifestyle promotes successful aging (Hertzog, Kramer, Wilson, & Lindenberger, 2008). As an older adult, maintaining active cognitive functioning results in an improvement in their quality of life.
