As the primary union between land and sea based commerce, ports are susceptible to virtually every natural disasters known to man. Earthquakes, tornados, tsunamis and nor’easters all present challenges to port operations that are not easily overcome. The primary threat posed by severe weather is its unpredictability. Although some weather events, such as hurricanes, are predictable and afford time to implement contingency plans, thus mitigating their effects, others, such as tornados as less predictable and can strike at a moment’s notice. The blizzards of 2015 exemplify the unpredictability of severe weather and the effects it can have on seaports. Between January and February 2015, two major snow storms, Juno and Marcus, and several

Right from the start, our two essays approach their own topics in their own unique ways, using their own unique terminologies, and describing their individual weather event in drastically different tones. The first essay, What They Don’t Tell You About Hurricanes, starts off by declaring the uncertainty of a hurricane. The essay elaborates on the aftermath of a previous maelstrom that maliciously tore through the coast, initiating deadly lightning fires and horrendous floods. The monotonous way one prepares for such a storm is described almost in a detached, robotic way as if the ones preparing do not want to show any emotion because they know that if they do, all that will emerge is fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of the known, and an incredible…

The Hurricane Hunters flew their “WC-130Js straight into the eyes of hurricanes, incoming from the outskirts of the storm to its center and then back out again, making multiple trips to measure the wind speed and barometric pressure” (Story of Innovation). The results offer critical data about how dangerous storms are and the direction of tropical storms, increasing the accuracy of the National Hurricane Center forecasts by thirty to forty percent. Probably the most amazing fact is that, since 1974, no WC-130 aircraft, flown by the Hurricane Hunters, have been lost. That safety and performance record is a testimony to the skills of the pilots, and an example of the strength of a sixty-year-old Lockheed design that shows no sign of going anywhere. “C-130’s were also equipped to carry out low-altitude parachute drops of cargo, which led to the plane’s important role in the defense of Khe Sanh in ‘68” (Perry).…
