At the end of the day the estimated amount of money spent overall on the day of the super bowl ends up being around 5.6 billion dollars. I just want to take a step back and think that the kind of good that could be done with this money. To put it into a little bit of perspective, if America took three years and saved this money instead of spending it on super bowl enjoyment that would give us a budget of about 16.8 billion dollars. The other day I came across a picture on facebook which was created by Katie Bieber Loverland which shows the good we could do with 14 billion dollars. With this money we could give a year of education to 1.3 million school children, 70,000 $200 thousand dollar grants could be given for research on cancer, HIV/AIDS, …show more content…

Any psychology major should know that in today’s society our generation is obsessed with always having to be doing something. Whether it be always being on your phone, playing a game, talking to people, or watching something on the television. Our brains always have to be stimulated, and football gives many people the opportunity to watch something and stay engaged. This is because even though either way you did not actually do anything to help the team a person disengages from loss. These days a big thing with sports is fantasy leagues where a person can create their own little team and follow how everyone on their team is doing which if they do well you get more points for yourself. Why college athletes should be paid In 2007 a collegiate football player, Stanley Doughty, gave up his senior year to play for the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL and was signed to play for $400,000 for the next 2 years, but found out later that he had a cervical spine injury and he was one hit away from being paralyzed so he was cut by the Chiefs. He needed surgery for it but South Carolina, the college he went to, refused to pay for it even though these players make billions of dollars for their colleges every year (TheAtlantic). These colleges obviously just care about making money and using the players for their sake. If Doughty was able to receive some type of benefit for playing he would have been better off, but instead he has no college…
