We used donated purses from my mom and I, and filled them with products that women in the area would need. The contents of the purse were things such as lotion, soap, deodorant, feminine products, and a protein bar. These things are essential to women and women who do not have the funds to purchase them might not be able to get them in any other way. We then delivered the purses to the Good Shepherd Center in Wilmington for the staff there to distribute them to the ladies that need them the most. We were able to have the opportunity to sit down with the ladies and talk to them about their struggles and hear some of their inspiring stories.…

Studies done by the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless show that from 2013-14 there were roughly 138,575 people living homeless in the city of Chicago alone. This is an increase of 19.4% in just one year. Chicago Public Schools identified 22,144 homeless students in 2013-14 which is an 18.6% increase from the prior school year. With steadily increasing rates it would seem only logical that the city would work to increase the amount of shelters provided for these people in need. Growing up in a southern Alabama town of less than 10,000 residents, I was not truly aware of the issue of homelessness. Homelessness was only a subject which I had seen in the news and in movies. However, when I became a peer helper as a junior in high school, my perception soon changed. I became part of a peer mentoring program, in which I counseled underprivileged and troubled middle school students. Through this program I discovered that homelessness was not a problem rooted in major cities, for it lied even in a town as small my own.…
