First, they put an I.V into your arm, which has anesthesia to put you to sleep. Than the doctor puts antiseptic solution over your skin and makes an incision down the center of your chest. They seperate your sternum, exposing your heart. Next, they place tubes into your chest to keep blood pumping through your body. Once the blood is completely put into a mchine called a cardioplumonary bypass, the diseased heart is removed and the doners is sown into place. After your new heart begins to beat the physician observes the function of your new heart, making dure it works properly. They will then rejoin the sternum and sewed together with small wires.
