Being an American means creating and not destroying. It’s contributing to a better life not just for you but for those around you. It’s accepting differences that you may have with others. It’s tolerance. It’s being understanding. It’s being innovative and motivated.
America should be based entirely around these ordeals but it’s not. Greed, prejudice, crime, and ignorance are what embodies America in today’s world. In 2016 alone there have been hundreds of mass shootings, dozens of mass drug arrests, and people are less than decent to fellow Americans every day. If everyone practiced good works like generosity, kindness, acceptance, and hard work then there would be no problems.
What makes America great and relatively unique is that as an American you have the freedom to choose what to do with your life. It may not seem like a big deal but when you consider the little freedoms that people experience in other countries, the power that you have over your life is comparatively gargantuan. With this power we can either add to society in a good way through hard work, respect, and spreading the idea of equality or we can bring it to it’s knees through prejudice, misdeed, and selfishness.
