Things to Do in San Juan Capistrano Great Stone Church The ruins, more commonly known as the Great Stone Church, is one of the most interesting sections of SJC Mission. The church was laid out as a cross shape with a bell tower that can be seen as far away as 10 miles and whose bells could be heard even further. This historical church lasted only six year as it was destroyed by a 7.0-magnitude in 1812. The earthquake also took the lives of fifty plus people who were buried in the old church cemetery.…

On December 16, 1896, Griffith donated 3,015 acres of Rancho Los Feliz to Los Angeles and Griffith Park was born. Griffith insisted that this park would be a place of recreation and rest for the masses. When Griffith donated the land he specifically told the council, the park needs to be “a resort for the rank and file, for the plain people.” This donation was compared to a Christmas gift when Harris Newmark wrote that Griffith "so generously filled the stocking of Los Angeles with his immensely important gift of Griffith Park, with its three thousand and more diversified acres, magnificent heights, and picturesque roadways... the second largest pleasure ground in the world.…

Personal statement The year 2004 marked a time in my family’s history in which we took a substantial step forward by coming to the United States. Before that, we lived through and experienced a lot of unspeakable things. Originating in Somalia, my parents understood that it was a place where nothing could be achieved. Civil war broke out, devastating hundreds upon thousands of lives, including several of my family members. Corruption infected the government, military, and all forms of law enforcement.…
The two neighborhoods that I will be comparing and contrasting will be the Dolton neighborhood and the west side neighborhood and it is K town. The Dolton neighborhood is quiet and it is a small little city. The west side neighborhood is kind of bad because I used to live over there and from the looks of it, it got worse like more killing on the west side k town area. The dolton area is more secure with police officers who are always int he area 24/7 all day everyday. Both neighborhoods are different because they are 45 mins away from each other.…
Given all the topics brought up in the texts, the idea of the city really stuck out to me. I found the rural and urban contrasts; especially the aspects that make a walker feel free, intriguing. Through closer reading, I realized that although multiple writers hint towards an authoritative entity that prevents walking, few give it a name. After reading de Certeau and Solnit it became clear to me that the hints were towards the city. When I did more research, many writers mention architecture and how it predisposes humans to take a certain path.…

In the essay “Walking and the Suburbanized Psyche” by Rebecca Solnit, she believes walking was so valuable in the past because “walking was a sort of sacrament and a routine recreation”. People would walk frequently and voluntarily for their own pleasure like by making a date for a walk. Solnit narrates how “urban innovations such as sidewalks and sewers were improving cities” however it had “not yet menaced by twentieth-century speedups”. Solnit calls this period the, “golden age of walking” that initiated in the eighteenth century and she fears that it has “expired some decades ago”, yet its significance is the “creation of places to walk and its valuation of recreational walking”. Unfortunately, the development of suburbanization which…
Walking is a natural task that we must take part in everyday. Before cars were invented in the late 1800’s, our own two feet was the main source of transportation. Since cars and other uses of transportation have evolved, walking has slowly diminished over the years. For the most part, we have brought this problem on ourselves. With everyday construction of new neighborhoods, cities, highways, and roads, we are generating them to be less walker friendly.…
