Millions of people frequent grocery stores, malls, retail outlets, and pharmacies on a daily basis with the expectation that the products they need will be available. One of the largest Supply Chain organizations in the world works to exceed their customers’ expectations every day to ensure that those products are indeed available, and that company is Exel. Exel is a wholly owned entity of Deutsche Post DHL, the world’s leading logistics group (About Us: Exel, 2014), headquartered in Bonn, Germany. The Americas headquarters for Exel located in Westerville, Ohio provides an extensive range of solutions. As discussed previously, one of the three pillars of the Exel’s strategy is focused on being an employer of choice. The focus is apparent by the career development program which can be considered one of Exel’s many strengths. There are five core competencies of the program. These competencies consist of: Making Customer More Successful, Shaping Direction, Driving High Performance, Developing Others and Developing Self. Each employee is responsible for owing their development plan by using a 70/20/10 principle. This direction is accomplished through seventy percent of on the job experience, twenty percent of near the job experience, and ten percent of off the job experience. Exel has tailored the development plan to work for all functions within the organization from the distribution center to the corporate headquarters. Their warehouse management system is primarily based on the architecture of JDA’s Red Prairie™. This system is a very robust system and is capable of being highly customized for various applications and requirements for case and pallet picking operations. The Consumer Sector, Exel’s largest, has benefited greatly from multiple implementations of the system. Other sectors of the company have also adopted the system as a platform to build their foundations upon. As JDA focused on new versions of Red Prairie™ yearly, the one downfall remains in the lessor units of measurements for picking such as inner packs and eaches. As the world continues to evolve into an eCommerce marketplace driven by the likes of Amazon®, customers require different solutions that the current platform does not support.
