Why Protesting is Patriotic
Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the President.” Patriotism is having pride in your country. Protesters are patriotic because they care enough about their country to want to make it better. For example NFL players are taking a knee during the national anthem, instead of standing to honor the flag. These players intention is not to disrespect the flag or the people who fought for it, it’s to bring attention to a larger issue: racial injustice.

For example, the quarterback for the 49ers had sat down for the ongoing police brutality and racial injustice in the United States. What Colin had to say was “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black a people and people of color.” He was not disrespecting the flag but trying to fix a problem that is going on in the world. He feels he should not have to stand for the flag if the world is being treated this way. He is using his voice and actions, but in no way was he disrespecting the flag or the veterans. He was just standing up for what he believes in, and there's nothing that says he can't do …show more content…
That is why some veterans take their own stand and kneel during the national anthem, because they know what it truly means to be brave. According to the article “Bend the knee: Whether you agree it or not, the protest is an act of patriotism” by Stan Grant from ABC news, it states, “Yet, some veterans have said that they fought precisely for the democratic freedoms - the right to protest - that all Americans, the athletes included, should enjoy. Indeed, protest lies at the very heart of the American nation.” This explains that even many veterans are saying that it is okay to protest if it is for the greater good of our nation. This disproves the argument that the opposing side claims because when we are protesting, we are not doing it to disrespect all the people who have lived and fought for our country before us, but we are doing it because these veterans that we are talking about fought for our freedom. But what is the point if we aren’t even truly free
In summary, protesting is patriotic because players use their voices to help others, and players have a constitutional right to protest. If you truly believe in our country and love it enough then it means you are brave enough to fight for it. Just because people protest, it doesn’t mean they don’t love their country. Instead it means that they love

In today's culture we have seen people disrespecting our country, our military, and our flag by taking a knee during the National Anthem; thinking about those situations make me embarrassed to be affiliated with such a group of Americans. Those men and women sacrifice their lives so we can live ours and that idea ,right there, is what makes our country so beautiful and so peaceful, so why not be on our feet with our hands over our hearts reciting our anthem to show them we are thankful for their bravery? That is the least we could do since they get shipped away from their loving families to risk their lives for our freedom, which sometimes we do not…

News of professional football players such as Colin Kaepernick and other athletes refusing to stand for the national anthem flood the headlines of American media today. These high profile individuals do not care, maybe even refuse to acknowledge, that their forgetfulness of their great American heritage and their disrespect for the symbol of our freedom, the American flag, has a very harmful impact on others. These high profile individuals’ overt actions towards the symbol of our freedom, the American flag, not only show their forgetfulness of our great heritage, but are also blinding others like high school athletes to do the same. To me, and the majority of Americans, particularly those who put themselves in harm’s way, their families and those who have lost loved ones doing so, this is very…

I believe that the main issue of weather it is right for NFL players to kneel during the National Anthem is majorly a racist issue. The proof behind this reasoning is that Collin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers quarterback stated that he was , "not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color." Personally I disagree with his opinion. Holding your hand over your heart is a tradition that has been carried on for many years that honors what our country stands for, which is not oppressing colors of race. Although there are many opinions on that statement, America has many different races, cultures, and ethnicity throughout our nation.…
