Discrimination toward teenagers is one of the most common types of discrimination there is in society. In the story “The Truth About Sharks’ written by Joan Bauer, a teenage girl named Beth is wrongly accused of shoplifting due to her age. On top of simply being a teenager, a teen’s appearance can also bring more discriminatory judgment toward them, as happens to Beth in the story. People who lack a sense of power in their lives tend to take it out on teenagers in the sense that they are an “easy” or “vulnerable” target. Another reason teens are often discriminated against is that they are stereotypically known to be mischievous. Teenagers deserve equal rights and judgment within our society; although many teenagers…

The great white shark: the king of ocean, the evil ruler, destroying everything in it’s path. From the looks of them, it would be understandable to make this assumption. But let’s clear the air for our good friend, the great white. In fact, over 80% percent of shark attacks had survivors. I mean, they lost a limb maybe, but they survived! Sharks don’t like the taste of us, because after taking one bite, they’ll leave. It’s all just a big misunderstanding. They confuse us for seals, their real prey. From below, it is hard to distinguish between what is seal and what is human, especially when they’ve a surfboard. Just to clarify, the human has the surfboard, not the seal. Great white’s are not a great threat, yet we demonize them.…
Great white sharks are thought to be one of the most vicious animals on earth because of how they are represented in movies and television shows. In reality they're really just another animal trying to stay alive. Shark culling is a state government implemented policy in which sharks within the vicinity of a beach can be legally killed through shark nets or drumlines or a combination of the two. Drumlines are unmanned buoyant drums anchored one kilometre of a beach's shoreline. In between the drums are ropes with hooks. Drumlines are baited so that if a shark is swimming in the vicinity of a beach it would be attracted to the bait and not humans. Each state has different policies on drumlines depending on their state government. A shark net is one that is submerged around beaches to reduce the chance of a shark attack. The net forms a partial barricade and aims to entangle and capture sharks of targeted species, through holes that entangle sharks over two metres.…
Hunter S. Thompson, named to be the creator of gonzo journalism, created the book “The Great White Shark Hunt” by compiling his past works of news articles, journal entries, letters to the editors, and personal works to inform readers about the seventies and eighties. In a specific article “The “Hashbury” is the Capital of the Hippies,” published in the New York Times Magazine on May 14, 1967 Thompson showed his experiences of what Height Ashbury was like, and told his predictions about what would happen when the 100,000 new hippies came into the city. Thompson’s purpose was to inform readers about what was happening in Height Ashbury, with specific details, imagery of the city, and information of the city. In doing so he informs that the hippie…

While finding food, the hammerhead shark uses its shape of its head to seek prey, which helps it to find food. That is one of the incredible abilities that animals have, to survive. They are called adaptations. The amazing pelagic zone is filled with many astounding animals, like puffer fish, great white sharks, seahorses, and many other mysterious creatures. The pelagic zone has frequent temperatures, lots of food, and very little pressure. The pelagic zone is in between the neritic zone and the bathyal zone. The definition of adaptation is a transformation that an animal makes to help it survive in its habitat. Some animals that live in the pelagic zone are puffer fish, glaucus atlanticus, and the hammerhead shark.…

The Great White Shark that I chose to research was Katherine. She was tagged on August 20, 2013 in Cape Cod Massachusetts. She weighed 2,300 pounds, 14 feet and 2 inches. She was named in honor of Katharine Lee Bates, a Cape Cod native and songwriter—best known for her poem and song “America The Beautiful”. The latest ping for Katharine is off the coast of Florida, near New Smyrna Beach. This area is also known as the shark capital and it consists of murky water that has bait fish within it. There is also prey in the Ponce de Leon inlet. There are many food sources that draw sharks to New Smyrna beach. Over the course of almost four years, Katharine has traveled down and up the eastern seaboard, and visited the Gulf of Mexico. In looking…

Shark Adaptation. Adaptation for a shark is crucial for its hunting and more so for its survival. A shark's size is vital to its survival since “as the size of the great white shark increases, the prey spectrum also increases as the larger shark can feed on larger prey” (Maddalena). This allows the shark to be more efficient in its hunting by using its energy on one larger fish rather than a multitude of smaller ones. Shark’s are able to capture larger prey because “as the shark grows, the teeth become thick and strong to accommodate larger prey” (Maddalena). Without these adaptations sharks would be much less efficient in their hunting efforts.…
