Exclusive Meditation: Exclusive-Restrictive Or Opening-Up

When I found out that our assignment this module was relaxation techniques I was excited because I have never before been able to commit to practicing the techniques for more than a day or two. I decided to try meditation and PMR since I have never tried them before.

There are two different types to of meditation: exclusive/restrictive and inclusive/opening-up. I chose to focus on exclusive meditation for the assignment, this consists of all of your concentration is centered one thought and all other thoughts are excluded and pushed aside during meditation to increase your self-awareness and help you relax. I decided on exclusive meditation because my mind is always running with many thoughts and stressors, so I thought this would be a challenging

    According to Buddhism, mindfulness is “the gentle effort to be aware or awareness of the present reality,” and there are many programs and therapy methods that uses mindfulness as their core treatment. For example, Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a well structured group program that teaches mindfulness meditation to relieve the symptoms of psychological, physical and psychosomatic suffering (Grossmann, 2004). Although MBSR is 8 to10 week program that requires active participations from the clients, the program has a broad benefit: according to Miller (1995), MBSR is effective method of treating anxiety disorder, and Grossmann’s meta analysis study (2004) proved that MBSR may have a positive effect on stress related mental illness, depression, and binge eating disorder.
