Have we as gym members ever walked by a group fitness class in the gym and thought about how intimidating it looked? I know I have, I would walk by the window of the group fitness room, pause for a moment, and contemplate on going in and joining the group. My thoughts and ideas would race back and forth in my mind about what it would be like. Would it be fun or would it be extremely difficult? Would I be able to keep up with the rest of the group? “my goal for them is to gradually get stronger, I want them to use those modifiers so that they can grow and develop with proper form”, said Shenise during her interview. She went on to explain how each class provides countless numbers of different options and modifications to meet each individual’s fitness level. A wide variety of different classes are offered, from high intensity to low intensity, down to stretching, there are classes for every level of exercise. Some of the different categories include cardio, HIIT training, strength, dance, yoga, and spin classes. By taking advantage of the many classes offered group members will keep their body guessing what’s next and their metabolisms will stay in overdrive.
Lastly, group fitness is not as intimidating as it may seem from the outside looking in. Group fitness has changed the lives of many people by offering a fun and positive environment for gym members to workout in together. Group fitness offers a variety of benefits that many gym members are missing out on by not giving a class a try. Though it may seem scary at first, like anything new does, from experience I can say first hand that just going in and participating for the first time is the hardest part, after that its smooth sailing. As said by Shenise Howard, “once you try it you will love

Summary I interviewed John Cummings whom is the Associate Director of Washburn’s Student Recreation & Wellness Center. Cummings received his Undergrad in History at Northern Arizona University and his Master’s in Public Administration from Drake University. I purposely selected Washburn’s Recreation & Wellness Center because that is the gym I personally use and did not know much about the managerial details and the overall statistics about the people that exercise at the Rec. The Recreation center is unique because it provides a different social atmosphere to over 500 students daily all who have made the conscious decision to come to exercise. The rec is not for athletic team practices and physical education classes its open to all students…

It had always been a dream of mine to enter high school and be not only a member of the dance team, but an officer or a colonel. Since I am an experienced, competitive dancer and have been dancing since I was 3, becoming a member of the team was fairly simple, but I knew becoming an officer would be a challenge. I became a member of the team my freshman year and instantly fell in love with the change of environment. When sophomore year arose, being apart of the team became tedious, but my yearning passion to become a captain continued my intense drive.…

My experience has been interesting, positive, and at the same time rewarding. My very first experience with working in group was couple of years ago during a final year project, in my country of birth. The project was in community medicine, and involved repeated trip to a rural community by my group to access their health status, and needs. We had many challenges, but overcame them all as a group. I learnt the act of collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making by consensus building, and most importantly; comradeship.…

Over the past week, I have gone to all three gyms multiple times and the first thing I observed that all three gyms have primarily two age groups, the first being highschoolers, teenagers, and overall younger people. Some just starting out with weight lifting and also many experienced teenage body builders. The next group was older people ages 60 and up. Younger weight lifters usually stuck to using free weights and older people tended to use only cable and isolation machines, as well as machines for cardio. The…

The droning sound of sharp exhales and the snapping of fists on thick cotton gis started to become something I wanted a break from, not something I wanted a break for. I started practicing kempo at the Guardian martial arts dojo when I was a child, since both my brother and my dad were also doing it, it became somewhat a family activity. After a few years, the forms and workouts that were done became dull to me, I felt that I wanted something new to do if anything at all. Thinking that it was the dull mat and lighting of the indoor dojo was the problem, I decided to shove myself at something that was outside. I ended up trying soccer, and joining a team.…

Over the years growing up I have been able to meet many people from the gym that I would have never met otherwise. Through the years there have been quite a few people that have come and gone through the gym. Some did not know what to expect and did not like it or people who just didn't like putting in the time to really learn anything and improve. I have also had the opportunity to meet many different people from around the country and even the world from going to different seminars and training camps, none of which I would have been at unless I was involved at the gym.…
