Prior to 1963, this term did not exist as a category of exceptionallity in children (Heward,2013). Although the term exists, there are various defitions of it. Heward (2-13) tells us that " the fundamental defining characteristic of students with learning disabilities is the presence os specific am\nd significant achievement deficits seemingly in spite of adeequate overall intelligence " (pg.170).There are many challenges asociated with meeting the neecs of children with exceptional needs.The teacher that I work with says she loves working with exceptional children. The students hgave to be observe on a daily base by observations, running record, and data. She said she has to leanr the learniign style for all her stuudents becaise children learn in different ways. Mrs. Sikkemasaid in her clasroomshe split her students iunto different groups. She said when you are doing your lesson plan for exceptional children you have to modify your klesson. For examople, if you have a leesonthat requires students toiuse scissors to cut something out your modification will be to cut the piece out for the children or scaffold them. Mrs. Sikkema sated that she is constanly learnign new strategioes for her students (Sikkema,2105,personal communication). Ths students in her classrom that are high achievers continue to get the high qulity diffe . Ths two students that are on behavioral plan take shome a speacial chart everyday they are rewarded and knowledge abouyt their good behavior.
