Victor the scientist creates a creature stronger than himself, and abandons it. The creature appears so hideous, that everyone that sees it believe they see a monster. After being abandoned by Victor and abhorred by mankind, the creature becomes depressed. Soon, the creature questions its existence, and attempts to ruin its creator’s life by murdering members of Victor’s family. Victor says “I had been the author of unalterable evils, and I lived in daily fear lest the monster whom I had created should perpetrate some new wickedness. I had an obscure feeling that all was not over and that he would still commit some signal crime, which by its enormity should almost efface the recollection of the past.” Each time a family member gets choked to death, Victor gets worse. Finally, the creature meets Victor, tells him he has no friendship, and asks Victor to create a female for him. Victor hesitates, but finally consents, hoping the creature will cease the murdering. Months later, Victor is almost finished with the bride for the creature, when the creature shows up, scares him, and watches in horror as Victor destroys its bright bride future. The creature is very angry at this and lets Victor know that it will make Victor’s life so miserable, that he wished he never lived. Victor contemplates the situation and believes the creature wanted a bride so the creature could reproduce and rule the land. After the creature murders Victor’s brother, Victor resolves to track down the creature and destroy it. The creature hears about this, kills Victor’s future wife, and journeys to the north pole. He should have pursued the creature a little ways to chase it away, and then double back. Victor could also have created a female for the creature but made it not able to reproduce. Both the creature and Victor made very bad mistakes, and both are at fault. Also, none of this would have happened had Victor never learned how to create animation in a human body. In the novel Victor says “I chanced to find a volume of the works of Cornelius Agrippa. I opened it with apathy; the theory which he attempts to demonstrate and the wonderful facts which he relates soon changed this feeling into enthusiasm. A new light seemed to dawn upon my mind, and bounding with joy, I communicated my discovery to my father. My father looked carelessly at the title page of my book and said, ‘Ah! Cornelius Agrippa! My dear Victor, do not waste your time upon this; it is sad trash.’ If, instead of this remark, my father had taken the pains to explain to me that the principles of Agrippa had been entirely exploded and that a modern system of science had been introduced which possessed much greater powers than the ancient, because the powers of the latter were chimerical, while those of the former were real and practical, under such circumstances I should certainly have thrown Agrippa aside and have contented my imagination, warmed as it was, by returning with greater ardour to my former
