Throughout the novel, the vitality of family and community are displayed. In chapter 12, Lee introduces the readers to the black church community. The church is used as a gambling location for Caucasians, only four members of the church can read, and the whites have no respect for their church. Despite all these factors that might tear the church apart, the church comes together to lend a helping hand when one is in need. While Tom Robinson was serving his time in jail, riverine Sykes encouraged the members of the church to offer donations to Tom Robinson’s wife so that she would be able to survive.
