The Crucible by Arthur Miller Is much more than just a dramatization of a Witch Hunt but instead is an example of human weakness, hypocrisy and vindictiveness. Throughout the Witch Trials people in Salem were able to seek revenge on their enemies, human weakness, and show the outright hypocrisy of the witch trials as a whole. Throughout The Crucible you see examples of these three elements through Abigail, Mrs.Putnam, Parris, and many other characters. Quotes and examples from the text will show how The Crucible was a clear illustration of these elements through the storyline, conflicts between characters and the play itself.

Throughout the play you see examples of vindictiveness such as Abigail who was the Proctors housekeeper until an affair between John Proctor and Abigail. Then after John refused Abigail's love after the affair Abigail seeked revenge against John and accuses Elizabeth Proctor of witchcraft. Also, through Abigail and the girls acting they are able to falsely accuse other women and enact their revenge against women they were jealous of or did not find worthy of living among them because of jealousy or disgust towards them. But many others besides Abigail and the girls were vindictive for land disputes or other conflicts. A good Example of this would Be Ann Putnam, she had lost seven children the night they were born. Ann Putnam is angered by the loss of her children and is willing to use anything to get revenge on whatever has caused her children to die. The witch trials give Ann Putnam the ability to take this revenge by Rebecca Nurse being accused. Rebecca was a midwife to Anne Putnam for some of her children and had 11 children and was 26 times a grandmother and using the excuse of witchcraft Ann Putnam was able to enact her revenge on Rebecca Nurse who she thinks killed her children.
