Every time I take the max and especially the green line, I look at the operator and think was he the one who was driving the max that night. Even though I don’t remember his face, I still live in that moment. I remember that night, when I could not believe how my mother was treated in front of me. Someone who has not spent so much time in the United States and does not speaks English. I tried my best and talked to the trimet operator through the intercom and it sounded like he listened, but no response for help. Eventually, I started to block the door when it stopped at a station. Every female in my family so far have got married when they are a teenager except for me as I have a long way to go to pursue a career. So, one could imagine the norms I have been against in order to come to the United States. Furthermore, my family has been constantly pressuring me to go back to India. My mother often panics as she thinks I am not safe here. After my family went back to India, we do not talk to each other as much as we used to because every time we end up discussing about that night. There were days I could not sleep thinking about the court or I would binge eat and sleep so that I would not have to meet my friends. I was told by my family that a woman does not stands up in a courtroom to fight for justice, and a shame for a family to go through court.
In terms of professional life, I work with criminals and homeless who have mental health issues. Thus, being a victim in this case was hard. But, I wanted to make sure that the defendant is getting the right mental health treatment. When I was 14 years old, I was sure that after I would go to America for my bachelor’s degree, I would work towards pursuing my master’s and doctoral degree. However, this incident has influenced my career plans. My four years of college had beautiful memories in the city of roses, and I am glad that this incident did not occur when I was in school taking a full time course
