In “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, he uses verbal irony to add humor and sarcasm to his story, while also emphasizing the intentions of the main character, Montresor. Verbal irony can first be seen when Fortunato, another main character, and Montresor meet and he says, “My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met” (SpringBoard 117). Fortunato is the opposite of lucky as Montresor plans to kill him. Another example of verbal irony can be observed later on as the men while drinking say, “‘I drink [...] to the buried that repose around us.’ ‘And I to your long life’” (SpringBoard 119). This is ironic because Montresor is toasting to his long life when, in fact, he plans to kill him shortly, thus he would not have a long life. Because
