Adolescence is the time for humans to find themselves and gain the skills that help guide who they will be in life. It is also when most people struggle with alienation. Two Asian-American boys experienced these feelings in distinctive ways. In Brian Kim’s “Arm Wrestling with Grandfather” and Shanlon Wu’s “In Search for Bruce Lee’s Grave”, themes of loneliness and role models present the reader with a unique basis for comparison and contrast.…

Life-changing experiences, or turning points, often cause difficulty to the person who is facing them. This thought is explored in the text,” The Father of Chinese Aviation,” by Rebecca Maksel, the autobiography Warriors Don’t Cry written by Melba Pattillo Beals, and the narrative I Never Had it Made by Jackie Robinson. Feng Ru, The first Chinese Aviator, Melba Pattillo Beals, one of the first black children to go to a white school, and Jackie Robinson, the first black MLB player, have all faced life-changing experiences and, in doing so, have affected their own countries gravely. Jackie Robinson was the first, of his race, to play in major league baseball. Jackie was asked to join a major league team, the Brooklyn Dodgers, and, even though…

When I entered high school I got a job to help my parents pay the bills and send money to my family in Ethiopia. My parents were working 40 plus hours a week to support an immediate family of 7 and over 30 relatives in Ethiopia. Me getting a job was a tremendous relief for them. I was dedicated to working about 30 hours a week and this took both an emotional and physical toll on me. I woke up at 7am each day to go too school followed by a two hour soccer practice, then a seven hour shift at Caribou Coffee, followed by hours of homework and studying.…

As a little girl, I always found myself pondering who I was, and what made me this way. At the time I didn't give thought to culture or race, I thought more of why my thought process was this certain way and wondered why every person must have their own different voice in their head. As I got older and began to grow through new knowledge and experiences, I then understood that we simply do not have this magical thought process that just suddenly appears. I realized that the way we think, the way we view ourselves and others are all influenced by our upbringing which is heavily based on external influences, which include such things as environment and culture.…

One piece of technology I have found that impacts my life this week is the car. I believe people take the things we have for granted, you just jump in your car put a little gas in it and drive wherever you need to go. I realize that probably was not the case in the younger years of America. The car has impacted my life because I live in York and getting to tech is a thirty minute drive for me every day. If I had to walk I would never get here on time or have to get up very early just to make the journey, and in this cold weather that is upon us at the time it would be a very cold walk as well.…

In everyone’s life there is one or two significant events that change them. In August of 2015 I traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina for ten days with my church on a missionary trip. The experience of being exposed to a culture outside my own showed me how diverse, yet similar people can be. Being able to first-handedly be apart of a different culture brought to life the fact that humans are basically the same anywhere you go and are interwoven by the same values and interests. Being able to easily build relationships with people who did not even speak the same language as me impacted me greatly, showing me that I have common interests with people on the other side of the hemisphere.…

Often a small event can shape a life. Identify an event in your life – something that an outsider might consider insignificant – that had an unexpected impact on you. Discuss why it affected you so significantly and how it contributed to the person you are today. Most people are under the common misconception that big events are what change a person’s life. While this is indeed true, my experience has been that a life’s path is equally influenced by small events.…
