I’ve always wanted to be tied to a fence post with a few of my teeth knocked out and a stylish new cut to my arm with words that mean “cigarette,” or “happy.” My desire unfortunately has never been fulfilled like many of my other desires. I have never had the chance to be disowned by a family that claimed to love me. I have never been told I was evil by a church. I have never been bullied for any reason that has to do with my sexual orientation. If my desire is to have all this done to me, why not just choose to be gay? It’s not that simple, just like many penguins and dolphins, I cannot simply choose to be gay, just as those who are gay cannot choose to be straight. Being gay is just the way homosexuals were born. “Gay people can choose to be straight,” I hear this statement all the time from people who are members of a church. But if it were so simple to choose being straight, why did they choose the torture of being gay to begin with? The problems cause by this myth led to many being disowned, bullied, and hated. The only way to solve this problem is by education. A 2000 year old text isn’t the solution to the view of homosexuality, but education is. If we teach people that people cannot choose their sexual orientation, just like people cannot choose their skin color, it may lead people to be more tolerant. We could educate people by making homosexuality more common in children’s everyday life by encouraging the reading of books about homosexuality. We could also discourage teaching children that thinking anyone is an abomination. Knowledge, insight, and empathy, are the only way to solve this problem and stop this
