Reality Television shows are challenging sit coms and dramas for dominance in the television market. Certain sitcoms, dramas, and news programs might be widely popular, however; they are expensive to produce due to actors, writers, producers. Reality shows may not be as popular but they are relatively cheap to produce. Often there are no trained actors and writing and production staffs are scaled down. An example of a sitcom is ABC’s Meet the Goldberg’s and an example of a reality show is Discoveries Street Outlaws. The Goldbergs was created and partly produced by Adam Goldberg. For example for the series Adam lugs around a prehistoric looking video camcorder which has now been replaced by smaller versions and cell phone cameras. Throughout the series there is bits of other conflict for example Beverly cooking every night and taking care of the kitchen since she is a women and that is her job versus Murray who comes home after work and sits in his recliner and does no house work. The tension in the Goldbergs is really simple and it is minimal. In Street Outlaws the tension is extremely high with sizable amounts of money and pride on the line. Conflicts are resolved through racing. In street outlaws they pit underdog female racers against males. Street racing is perceived to be a man’s sport and women cannot compete with them. Also another theme is that since it is illegal to street race and they put the racers into conflicts versus law enforcement. In one episode of Street Outlaws the Oklahoma crew went to the “Dirty South” and raced a group of majority black racers. The Oklahoma crew is mostly white and this pitted white’s vs black and there was more conflict than normal when the Oklahoma crew races other majority white groups. ABC’s the Goldbergs are often depicted as a fun loving family living life in the 1980’s while Discoveries Street Outlaws depicts big, burly tattooed men participating in dangerous illegal street racing. The Goldburgs in centered around the relationship of a family and growing up in the 80’s culture. Street Outlaws on the other hand really tries to depict the show has extremely masculine. They depict the participants as working class and that it’s kind of a underground
