Author’s create suspense by putting the characters in jeopardy , either they are overcoming an obstacle with another person or group or people, having a dispute with some “great god”, or even having internal struggle with themselves they are put in peril in some way. In the story “ The Tell Tale Heart”, by Edgar Allen Poe the author creates suspense by using repetition. The author repeats the same sentences or phrases in his writing for suspense. As Poe states, “But even yet I refrained and kept still.” and the states again “Yet for some minutes longer I refrained and stood still.” This shows how the author repeats his words, it shows the rerun of what he had already stated. However in the other story, “The Pedestrian”, by Ray Bradbury, this

The Tell-Tale Heart is a story written by Edgar Allen Poe and is a story which I’m pretty sure, much like many other mandatory school readings like Shakespeare and Thatcher, that many of you have read and most of you have forgotten, myself included. To recap the tale, and summarize for those of you who actually haven’t read it, the Tell-Tale Heart follows the story of a man who tries his best to convince us he is not crazy whilst he plots to murder someone for the sole reason that one specific detail of the man displeases him. The story literally opens up with the man asking us if we will think him mad once the story is over, in fact it references a disease afflicting the man himself clueing us in that this man might be an unreliable narrator. The written language of the text definitely harkens back to around the 1800s with specific mention going to the placement of words in sentences and the significance of certain aspects of the Christian mythos, which was quite popular back then.…

Suspense creates a sense of tension and excitement. In literature, authors tend to use suspense to make the reader feel doubt, uncertainty, and most importantly, anxiety. Aside from withholding information from the readers, or keeping the action intense, these authors are able to use these different techniques to build suspense. Richard Connell and Edgar Allan Poe are such authors. While “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell and “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe both use techniques of suspense to establish a tone of uncertainty and mystery for the reader, Edgar Allan Poe conceals information from the readers to elevate suspense while Richard Connell makes the reader anticipate what is going to happen next.…

Dahl’s use of diction displays suspense in the short stories. Another quote that creates suspense is, “‘His skin was just like a baby’s.’” Dahl again uses diction or past tense to reveal suspense in “The Landlady.” Furthermore, Poe’s short story, “A Tell- Tale Heart,” also expresses suspense by using diction. In Poe’s short story it says, “I kept quite still and said nothing.…

Suspense, a noun, is “a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen.” Suspense gives you adrenaline and a feeling that has you flying like you are on some roller coaster that is taking you high into the sky, with a large, quick plummet down to the bottom. Suspense like that is important to a story because it keeps the reader on their toes and makes them want to continue to read. To create this, authors can use conflict, irony, and foreshadowing in their stories. To begin, in the Rights to the Streets of Memphis, the author, Richard Wright, uses conflict to create suspense in the text.…

Mary McCarthy, an American author, once said: “We all live in suspense from day to day; in other words, you are the hero of your own story.” This means, each day everyone wakes up and they do not know what is going to happen, but at the end of each day they have written a story about that day and what has happened. The English III classes read “The Minister’s Black Veil” by Nathaniel Hawthorne and “The Pit and the Pendulum” by Edgar Allan Poe; these stories were written during the Dark Romanticism period. These stories were both on the dark side which leads the characters to do somethings that were a little unusual and they are not sure how everything is going to turn out. Each author uses these stories to build suspense and ambiguity throughout…

In both of Edgar Allan Poe’s terrifying short stories, “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Cask of Amontillado” a murder is described in the eyes of the perpetrator. In “The Tell-Tale Heart” the murderer kills an old man because he believed that the old man’s milky eye was evil, whereas in “The Cask of Amontillado” a murderer kills a man who had previously insulted him. Edgar Allan Poe utilizes the narrator’s disturbing point of view and the cynical tone to entertain the reader with a suspenseful and horrific story. To begin with, Edgar Allan Poe describes the murder in each of the short stories through the unreliable point of view of the perpetrator which gives insight of their twisted perspective enhancing the suspense of the story. When the narrator in “The Tell Tale Heart” enters the old man’s room to kill him, the narrator describes how, “but even yet I refrained and kept…

You should try and make a ‘page-turner’. In the story of Tell-Tale Heart, I thought suspense was easily shown when it said how he crept up the stairs and slowing waited when the man called out. You could imagine yourself in his position with your own heart pounding. Somehow, while watching the play, I wasn’t as satisfied. Sure there was suspense when he opened the door and shined the light at the old man but, when was talking to the police officer, I wasn’t scared.…
